The VIMS/SMS Gloucester Point and Eastern Shore campuses provide educators and the public access to classroom training experiences and instructional materials. A VIMS/SMS course (MS548, Technical and Continuing Education in Marine Science) exists to serve teachers who seek graduate credit for their COSEE training. VIMS has considerable experience and achievements with funding and engaging students from underrepresented groups

Hampton University Marine and Environmental Science Department

Hampton University is a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) graduating a large number of undergraduate and graduate students in the disciplines of Biological Sciences, Marine & Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, & Computer Sciences.

Programs within the School of Science work directly with local school districts (Hampton/Newport News), which serve a large minority population. Outreach occurs through the Science Center and the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies. HU also operates a Charter School for middle school students focusing on Science and Math.
