University of Maryland Center
for Environmental Science (UMCES)
Contact: Dr.
Laura Murray
The UMCES Environmental Science Education Center has been
in existence for over 25 years and has linked UMCES research
with education in a variety of teacher and student programs,
including research based workshops, graduate courses for teachers,
and summer research internships.
Partnerships established under COSEE with the Chesapeake
Bay Foundation, a nationally renowned informal education institution,
and with over 60 educators in three states (Maryland, Virginia,
and Pennsylvania) and the District of Columbia, and the Maryland
State Department of Education greatly enhance the application
of research to education.
The
Chesapeake Bay Foundation's award winning education program
strives to build stewardship for the Bay, while enhancing
student performance.
Using the educational goals of the Chesapeake 2000 Agreement,
CBF’s authentic, field-based learning opportunities
help national and state educational standards come alive for
students. CBF operates 21 educational programs across the
watershed, 11 in Maryland, 8 in Virginia, 1 in Washington,
DC and 1 in Pennsylvania. CBF provides more than 40,000 field
opportunities to Maryland Teachers and Students each year
and reaches an additional 150,000 through its classroom curriculum,
Chesapeake Choices and Challenges. |
