What is your niche?

Would you like to play a role in how students learn science concepts? Would you like to learn and practice new methods of teaching, with less “telling” and more “doing”? If so, formal education is your niche.

K-12 educators reach thousands of students over their careers. Working with educators and their students allows you to have a deep and lasting impact on understanding of science concepts.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED:

K-12 Students

  • Visit a MARE classroom to support an Ocean Week activity
  • Attend a career day event at a middle or high school
  • Conduct a “Parent” workshop or lecture for parents of MARE students

In-Service Teachers

  • Become a guest lecturer in COSEE sponsored workshop
  • Assist in leading a field trip or laboratory demonstration for a teacher workshop

Undergraduates, Non-majors Intro Course

  • Partner with a K-12 educator, curriculum supervisor, or education consultant to review your course syllabus and work together to identify ways to interject inquiry-based teaching techniques into your college level course

Pre-Service Teachers (Colleges of Education)

  • Offer to work with your School of Education to be a guest lecturer for an existing science methods course for pre-service teachers

The Atlas of Science Literacy is a collection of 49 conceptual strand maps that show how students' understanding of the ideas and skills that lead to literacy in science, mathematics, and technology might grow over time. Each map depicts how K–12 learning goals for a particular topic relate to each other and progress from one grade level to the next. Click on the thumbnail image to obtain a copy of the Atlas of Science Literacy.

Explore the RISE website from the National Academy of Science to determine what audience you have a natural interest in working with on your research area.
