What is your niche?

Do you want to work with people that are "volunteering" to learn marine science? Then informal education is for you. Informal education in self directed learning opportunities that inspire further learning and life long interest. Many (not all) informal education programs take place at public venues including zoos, aquaria, museums, nature, and science centers.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED:

Museums, Science Centers, Aquaria

  • Partner with local science museum, aquarium, or science center to develop unique and compelling public materials, exhibits, and/or activities that highlight current research

Popular magazines, books, newspapers, websites

  • Hire a journalist/ consultant to develop a children’s book or music CD focusing on your research

Radio/TV

  • Hire a journalist to collaborate on the development of a radio program.
  • Work with PBS to produce a TV show documentary
ex. The JCNERR was the subjuect of PBS's Trailside series. The COOLroom scientists produced their own video using an independent producer.

Interpretation is the term used to describe communication activities designed to improve understanding at parks, zoos, museums, nature centers, historic sites, cruise companies, tour companies and aquariums. (Director – National Association of Interpretation)

Explore the RISE website from the National Academy of Science to determine what audience you have a natural interest in working with on your research area.
