Mentor Scientist

What is your niche?

Would you like to play a role in how students learn science concepts? Would you like to learn and practice new methods of teaching, with less “telling” and more “doing”? If so, formal education is your niche.

K-12 educators reach thousands of students over their careers. Working with educators and their students allows you to have a deep and lasting impact on understanding of science concepts.

WAYS TO GET INVOLVED:

K-12 Students

  • Become a “Scientist in Residence” in a school, mentoring students as a year or semester long effort
  • Spend a week intensively working with a class on a inquiry-based project

In-Service Teachers

Undergraduates, Non-majors Intro Course

  • Recruit a computer science graduate student to create data visualization products that highlight your current research but can be applied to teach important science concepts

Pre-Service Teachers (Colleges of Education)

  • Work with faculty from your School of Education to develop an internship in your laboratory for a pre-service teacher

Whole School / District Systemic Change

  • Support good science process teaching by leading a field trip or laboratory experiment as part of the MARE Professional Development Program or in school building

The Atlas of Science Literacy is a collection of 49 conceptual strand maps that show how students' understanding of the ideas and skills that lead to literacy in science, mathematics, and technology might grow over time. Each map depicts how K–12 learning goals for a particular topic relate to each other and progress from one grade level to the next. Explore the RISE website from the National Academy of Science to determine what audience you have a natural interest in working with on your research area.
