Taking the Pulse of Our Changing Planet, Summer 2005
Workshop |
This is a professional development workshop for middle
school science teachers. During this workshop you will work
with scientists and educators to explore the research conducted by
Mid-Atlantic coastal observing systems and investigate how to use
observatory data to enliven and enrich your science lessons. |

Docent Training |
MA COSEE educators (IMCS-Rutgers partners and NY Aquarium) trained
120 docents to demonstrate a fish tagging activity for the public.
This activity highlighted the use of biological observing systems
and the value of real-time data. A computer touch screen display was
developed as a pilot effort to expand our interaction and information
delivery with Aquarium visitors. |

Student-Scientist Video Conference |
Educators, scientists, engineers, and most importantly inner
city 6th grade students from Empire Tech School in Cleveland, Ohio
participated in a joint "scientific meeting" using video
conferencing
technology. The conference was a pilot program designed to connect
scientists directly with students to enhance science learning. |

LaTTE Science |
MA COSEE (Rutgers – IMCS and Stevens -CIESE) supported the
development of a “virtual pressroom” to assist LaTTE scientists
in getting information out to the public about ocean circulation dye

Building Pathways: Productive Partnerships Between Scientists and
Educators |
This program brought 27 scientists and educators together to explore
issues in science education from a regional to national perspective,
the roles for scientists in education and vise versa... How can we
create a symbiotic relationship?, and cognitive development: when
and how to teach ocean sciences? |

Observing Systems Pilot Course |
Ten middle and high school educators from New York, New Jersey,
and Maryland participated in a two-week field experience focused on
the technology and data associated with coastal observing systems.
Participants worked collaboratively with scientists and MA COSEE education
professionals to learn about the research associated with coastal
systems. |

Oceans Connecting Education |
MA COSEE recruited six educators (3 Community College Faculty and
3 high/middle school educators) from Arizona, Ohio, and Florida. These
educators worked collaboratively with COSEE staff to assist in the
“nationalizing” of COOL Classroom and the Gulf Stream
Voyage. They conducted in-services in their states and assist in the
revision of these COSEE web-based materials. |
