The Sea You Can't See: A Marine Microbiology Workshop

Hosted by: Rutgers Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences (IMCS)

Dates: June 27-28, 2005

Place: Jacques Cousteau Coastal Education Center, Tuckerton, NJ

Grade level(s): 8-12

Stipend: $100 stipend per educator, maximum 12

Ever wondered what makes life on Earth possible? Sure, water and sunlight and climate are all important, but, even with those ingredients, most living things wouldn't last too long without microbes. Join scientists and education professionals in the classroom and field to learn about the roles of microbes in the marine environment - as essential recyclers of nutrients and organic matter, food for other organisms, and agents of change in the biology and chemistry of the ocean. Participants will review new lesson plans to discover how they relate to educational standards and benchmarks, and provide feedback to the project development team.

This workshop is currently full, but we are still accepting applications to be put on a waiting list.
