The Oceans: We are amazed by its beauty, power, and tranquility. We flock to its shores for vacations. We are captivated by its creatures. Yet we know so little about it. Scientists (oceanographers) have long studied it, but much of the information has remained in the halls of science. Now a new technology is emerging which will allow us to take a peek at the oceans through Ocean Observing Systems. Join the scientists as they explore the oceans through the use of these technological systems. Study ocean movement and its effect on our weather, ocean critters and pollution. Learn how to predict what the ocean temperature may be when you go to the beach or where the best fishing spots may be based on ocean temperatures. Bring back to your classroom activities that use this real-time data to stimulate your students in ocean science and meet education standards.

Existing Curricula and Projects related to Observing Systems:

  • COOL Classroom
This site, which is designed for middle and high school students, offers real time data projects, tutorials, and links to real time coastal data.
  • EARTH (Education and Research: Testing Hypotheses)
This is a prototype site designed for students to explore, learn, and imagine what you could do with access to real-time data from moorings out in Monterey Bay.
Highlight -- Real-time data projects

Check out the Gulf Stream Voyage
This is an online multidisciplinary project that utilizes both real time data and primary source materials to help guide students in the discovery of the science and history of the Gulf Stream.

  • Student Experiments At Sea (SEAS)

Would you like to bring deep-sea research and authentic student inquiry into your middle and high school science classroom? Want your students to understand what is happening in the deep ocean? If so, please join the Student Experiments At Sea (SEAS) program on its next research cruise April 23 - May 14.  Read more here...

  • SEACOOS Workshop: Buoys, Boats, and Teachers Workshop a Big Success

The SEACOOS summer physical science workshop for teachers set sail June 7 with four middle and high school teachers and a university science educator participating. These teachers represented a cross-section of skill levels from true preservice, beginning teachers to veteran teachers with more than 20 years teaching experience. The workshop opened with an introduction to buoy technology as educators met with Dr. Robert Weisberg for a preview of SEACOOS science followed by guided tours of the Ocean Circulation Group’s labs and the Center for Ocean Technology at the USF College of Marine Science in St. Petersburg, Florida. Participants toured the labs and yard areas where they spent one-on-one time interacting with research scientists. Go to www.seacoos.org for more information about this program.
